Mrs. Otterbourne is Rosalie Otterbourne's mother. Both are passengers on the ship up the Nile. Mrs. Otterbourne is a novelist. She writes romance novels. When her books were no longer popular, however, Mrs. Otterbourne became an alcoholic. Rosalie spends the majority of her time trying to hide her mother's alcoholism to the rest of the world.

Mrs. Otterbourne is a witness to one of the murders and is therefore shot in the head and killed before she can provide information to Hercule Poirot and Colonel Race during their investigation.
