Friendship is a recurring idea. The odd friendship between Didi and Sexton is central to the novel. Though they are two very different people, the two share a bond, in this case, death. Sexton begins the novel longing for the end of his life, and Didi spends her day intent on enjoying hers. Despite their opposite views, the two develop a strong friendship, able to share their feelings and wishes, as well as their pain. Sexton in particular benefits from this friendship, learning from Didi that life is to be enjoyed and lived while you have it. Didi also benefits from her time with Sexton. The girl is able to teach him that his pain does not mean his life is not worth living, but instead something to grow past. Sexton is able to see the joy in his life and is able to look forward to things rather than dread them.
