violence and racistism
SJ and her parents collectively represent the role of allies in the fight against injustice. Unlike Jared and his friends, they do not claim not to see Justyce’s race; they acknowledge the way his life is different from theirs because of the color of his skin. They personally do not treat him any differently, but they provide understanding and additional support, especially by giving him a platform and an understanding ear when he needs to speak out. SJ defends Justyce and wider social justice causes in class, then apologizes later for taking over the conversation even though at the time Justyce did not feel emotionally prepared to speak in class.
SJ’s mother, Mrs. Friedman, provides legal help by getting Justyce out of his handcuffs in the novel’s opening scene and by supporting his relationship with his defense attorney in the trial after Manny’s death. All three of the Friedmans are emotionally expressive and understanding. When Justyce stays away for weeks after his misunderstanding with SJ and then after Manny’s death, the Friedmans still welcome him with open arms and express their support, SJ included. The novel presents their Jewish background as one reason they are more understanding and aware of the different levels of privilege in society, but overall they represent the capacity of members of the majority to live ethical lives that support social justice and equality.
