Why does Quan's mother want to visit him?

Quan's mother wants to tell him that his brother misses him, that his sister, Dasia, has been diagnosed with leukemia and she thought he should know, and that she lost her job, thus, she doesn't have any money to pay for the hospital bills. She also tells Quan that Trey heard about what was going on from Gabe, after which, came to Quan’s mother’s house and gave her money.
