What did Mrs. Wakefield say to Vargas about his race in Part 1, Chapter 4?

Mrs. Wakefield told the author, "You're not black, you're not white. Consider yourself lucky" (19). The concept of race in America was foreign to Vargas and he did not understand the division between "white" and "black" in the U.S. at this time.
