Forensic anthropology is an applied science mixing physical anthropology and the study of the human skeleton—human osteology—to the law. Forensic anthropologists assist in identifying deceased individuals regardless of whether their remains have been burned, mutilated, shattered or are in any way beyond recognition. The techniques of the forensic anthropologist are used to recover remains, as well as to determine age, sex, height, build and ancestry. They can also detect genetic and even bacterial and viral disease. They help determine causes of death and testify with the authority of an expert witness. Only one hundred anthropologists are certified forensic anthropologists in the United States and Canada.
