When the protagonist awakens after five days in the hospital, the doctor tells him they must work to fight off his infection. The patient, however, does not see this battle as one between microbes and bacteria.... he sees it as a metaphor for his own battle with self-loathing. "You see, Doctor," he tells the young surgeon, "what people say is true: man carries his fiercest enemy within himself." In this, we are reminded that the protagonist cannot escape the concentration camp, not because he is still in it, but because it is still in him.
