David Boring is the main character and narrator of the novel. He is 20 years old when the novel opens. He turns 21 and the novel unfolds. He grew up in Merryvale Township, raised by a single mother after his father left when David was very young.
David's father was a comic strip creator, so David has managed to save a few of his comic strips over the years. David's mother has always been very overprotective of David, so she home schooled him until he was 14. At 14, he had started going to public school, where he met Whitey.
David spends his senior year at a school for gifted kids. This is where he and Dot meet and became friends. Dot and David used to make super-8 movies together. David's obsessions with women and their bodies also had him create a scrapbook of naked women over the years. After high school, David moves to the city to get away from his mother. He lives with Dot.
