Who is Detective Migdia LaGuerta from Darkly Dreaming Dexter and what is their importance?

Detective Migdia LaGuerta is the detective in charge of the Tamiami Trail killer case. She proves herself to be an inept investigator, but she charms everyone, including the press. During the investigation of the Tamiami Trail killer, LaGuerta makes an arrest and obtains a confession from a man who is not the real killer, which in turn, allows her to take all the credit for solving the case. When the killer kills again, however, she is left looking like a fool. In the end, LaGuerta is killed and buried a hero.
