Who is Sophie Kraushaar from Daniel Half Human and what is their importance?

Sophie Kraushaar is Daniel's mother. Her parents left the Jewish community before she was born, and she was raised as a Christian German. Her ancestry, none-the-less, makes her a target for persecution by the Nazis. When the Nazis first come to power, Sophie's husband's prominent status protects both her and Daniel. As the Nazis gain power, however, her family becomes a target for persecution. Sophie wishes to leave the country, but her husband refuses for several years. It takes several years before the family leaves Germany in 1939.
