Who is Sir Hugo from Daniel Deronda and what is their importance?

Sir Hugo is Grandcourt's uncle and Daniel's guardian. He is described as somewhat gruff and self-centered, but he is also generous and kind. Sir Hugo took Daniel when he was just a small child, and he doesn't marry until Daniel is old enough to be away at school. Sir Hugo treated Daniel like his own son, so much so, that Daniel actually believed he might be his father.
