Who is Temple Brooks Gault from Cruel & Unusual: A Novel and what is their importance?

Temple Brooks Gault is the wealthy son of a plantation owner. He was arrested and jailed for assault, but he is later released without the knowledge of the legal system in order to work as a personal assassin for the governor of Virginia. Gault is a mentally-deranged individual, who was set free by the governor and given a free pass when his fingerprints were exchanged with those of a dead inmate. Gault escapes at the end of the novel, which allows him to roam free throughout the world.
