The mesa in Arizona where the Crossroads group travels for spring trip symbolizes desire and permission. Because this is the place where Russ experienced his sexual awakening, and the place where his spiritual understanding began evolving, he sees the mesa as a representation of excusable pleasure. He is therefore determined to visit the mesa with Frances, so that they can have sex in this seemingly sanctioned realm.
