The cigarettes Marion starts smoking again symbolize identity. Although smoking might appear like a flimsy prop, for Marion, smoking puts her in touch with the woman she believes is her true self. Smoking not only promises to help her lose weight, but allows her to embrace the formerly rebellious version of herself.
