Who is Marvin Ehrlich from Crossing to Safety and what is their importance?

Marvin Ehrlich is one of Sid and Larry's co-workers at the University of Wisconsin. Marvin, like Larry, is upwardly mobile but without the gifts and talents that push Larry forward. He and his wife are jealous of the Morgans, thus, their friendship never really takes off.
