Describe symbolism in Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner

In the novel, Sid's workshop and office are a symbol of his fear. Both rooms are perfect workspaces. Sid's wife, however, with her constant nagging and criticism, has made him too frightened of failure for him to use them.
