One of the novel's main motifs can be found in the lead cross, itself. Crispin carries the cross throughout the novel, as it carries with it the proof of his birthright. The lead cross weighs him down and puts him in great danger. When he later leaves the cross lying across John Ayecliffe's dead body and walks away, we know that Crispin has let go of the past, and that he is walking away from the trappings of wealth and the cruelty that is associated with it.
