Caitlin learns about the poverty in Zimbabwe, which is caused by political and ecomonical problems. She comes to learn that basic things like soap are difficult to obtain, that Zimbabwe had no form of public relief for its citizens (unemployment), and that the sick were sent away to die rather than being cared for.

Over time, Caitlin learns that Martin's mother had never worn or owned a pair of shoes, that Martin's toothbrush was seven years old, and that the family did not have the money for Martin to continue in school. She learns that martin's family lived in one room, and that there were holes in the walls and ceilings..... no protection from rain.

All in all, the extreme differences between America and Zimbabwe are displayed throughout, which serves to illustrate the differences in Martin and Caitlin's lives. In Zimbabwe, a woman without shoes is not “counted,” meaning she is essentially worthless and doesn't exist, because of this..... the gift of shoes to Martin’s mother meant so much to her and to the family. We also learn that the government’s instructions to those without work and who need help is to go to the country and die. As a result, Caitlin comes to recognize how privileged she is.... that while she was excited to receive a car for Christmas..... Martin was excited his family could eat.
