Eddie himself symbolizes a childlike greed. Throughout the novel, Eddie is preoccupied with all of the things he does not have. Like a spoiled child, Eddie is surrounded by shiny new toys (in his case, sports cars, Italian suits, and three mistresses) but quickly grows dissatisfied with his belongings and is greedy for more. He is jealous of his friends' possessions and is envious of the way their parents shower them with wealth, as he complains his own parents do not give him any money. Eddie's complaints read like they are coming from a child rather than an adult man.
