Nicholas Rosetti is a Cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church. He receives important information and an assignment from Pope Pius XIII just before the Pope's death. The church has received reports of two virgin pregnancies. In the past, Our Lady of Fatima prophesied that a virgin would come and bear the son of God, and a second virgin would bear the son of the Devil. In the interests of this story, the Church seeks to discover if either of these pregnancies fulfill the prophecy. This is Father Rosetti's task. As Father Rosetti searches for the truth he is repeatedly tempted by the Devil. He has visions, hears voices, is ill, and is physically beaten. Ultimately, though, he unravels the mystery and loses his life protecting humankind from the Devil's child.
