The abaya, an all-black covering of Muslim women symbolizes Iraq's descent into chaos in Correspondents. While most women in the novel do not cover before the American invasion, afterward they begin to cover to protect themselves and their identities. Murphy frequently shows Asmaa returning to the villa or her home and "pulling off the hated abaya" (258).
