How does Clay attempt to connect with Amari? Why are his attempts unsuccessful?

Clay tries to be friendly with Amari by asking her if she likes him. It quickly becomes evident that he is not truly interested in her, as he demands an answer to his question about her liking him. Further, he sent out an extra blanket for her, but his smell on it made her get rid of it quickly. His attempts are unsuccessful because, even though he is speaking with her, he still does not see her as an equal, or speak to her as such. He still tells her when to come, how to answer, and accepts it when she calls him him master.
