Irmgaard is an employee of the coffeehouse owned by Anna. Irmgaard has taken a vow of silence for unknown reasons. Katrina learns that Irmgaard was once a nun, but does not know much else about Irmgaard. However, Malcolm tells Katrina that the message he must deliver in Nordby is for Irmgaard. When Malcolm becomes ill from the weight of the undelivered message, Katrina goes to Irmgaard to ask her to take the message. Irmgaard then tells Katrina that she is the driver who caused the accident that killed Katrina's parents. Irmgaard has been punishing herself for this accident since it happened by taking her vow of silence and by living as sparsely as possible. However, Katrina forgives her because it was only an accident caused as much by the fog as anything else. Irmgaard finally takes the message and discovers that it is only a single word: live.
