Who is Dolly Pickles from Cloudstreet and what is their importance?

Dolly Pickles is Rose's mother and Sam's wife. She is an unhappy, alcoholic, who mistreats her family because she is disappointed by her own circumstances. Dolly cheats on her husband with a variety of men. Their attention makes her feel beautiful and desirable. Over time, Dolly becomes more dependent upon the drink than the men, and eventually, this problem escalates to the point her children have to go out looking for her. By the end of the novel, Dolly has gained a better appreciation for her family and understands that she needs them. She does not, however, gain any sympathy from the reader.
