A recurring idea is the contribution to the war effort. This isn't unusual during a time of war but the reader can see how people contributed what they could according to their abilities. For example, Jake Dillon, who had been a Marine, came back to active service for the Office of Public Affairs. He had been a highly paid Hollywood press agent before the war and the Metro-Magnum Studio continued to pay him his full salary while he was with the Marines.
