The novel is written in modern-day American English, though the events take place in England more than a century ago. For the most part, the dialogue reflects that modern-day tone, and most characters sound very much like all the other characters. There are a few exceptions, including the conversations with Aloysius and his coachmen, who have accents that are expressed in their dialogue.
