The saguaro cactus represents Willa’s connection to Arizona. While she is there, the cactus closest to her is big and thriving. It is a massive plant that she can admire every day she goes outside. However, while she is in Baltimore, Peter buys her a new and very small saguaro cactus. This represents the idea that Willa’s connection to Arizona is slipping away. She does not think about Arizona, nor does she want to go back. Willa knows that the cactus will survive long after she does, and that she is needed in Baltimore to help cultivate a new family.
