Who is Karakawe from City of the Beasts and what is their importance?

Posing as a native in search of employment, Karakawe travels with the International Geographic group into the Amazon, apparently as a personal aide to Professor Leblanc. In truth, he's an official for the Department for the Protection of Indigenous Peoples and spends the entire trip looking for proof of someone purposely harming the natives of the region.
