The book has several distinct settings ranging from the city of New York to the deep jungles of the Amazon and the mythical city of El Dorado. Some of these general settings really exist, though the majority of the specific settings do not. For example, New York City is a real place, but Kate's apartment is a figment of the author's imagination. The same is true of the Amazon. Though the jungle, the rivers and even some of the settlements described are real places, the specifics are not. Camp sites and buildings are created by the author for the story.
