Who is Christy Huddleston from Christy and what is their importance?

Nineteen-year-old, Christy Huddleston is the main character and protagonist of the novel. Christy arrives at Cutter Gap, as a volunteer teacher for the new school. Over the course of the novel, Christy herself becomes a student of mountain culture and tradition.... a world completely different than the one she grew up in.
