The scotch is a symbol of conformity. Gina notices that Alex drinks scotch at the office Christmas party, even though he drank beer each time she had eaten with him earlier. He tells her that he is trying to acquire a taste for it because it is what all of the other men in the financial analysis business drink. Alex’s decision to drink scotch even though he does not like it shows that he will do whatever it takes to fit in with the people he aspires to be like.
