Eldric enters the novel as the typcial bad-boy; he had been expelled from his school in London for throwing a rock through the stained glass window of a chapel. He has moved with his father to Swampsea in order to curb his rebellious spirit and perhaps insert some type of morals into his life. He moves into the Parsonage with the Larkins, staying in Stepmother's old room. He is intriguing to Briony and the two quickly become friends, forming the Bad Boys club, studying together as well as his teaching her to box. He is a kind and generous individual, spending large amounts with Rose who is enamored by his fidgetings, when he creates things out of common objects. It is clear that there is some type of chemistry between him and Briony, but this does not come to any sort of fruition until Blackberry Night when he saves her from an attempted rape by Cecil and kisses her.
