Importance of Fire and Water

Fire and Water are the two most powerful and dangerous elements, and in this novel both of them are used by Briony apparently as a result of her witchly powers. But while the water itself could have been a result of these primitive powers, the fire itself was man-made and so when the library becomes burnt it is a symbol of man killing the past.
