Irene Mengele was Josef Mengele's first wife. She enjoyed German culture and adored her husband. She even visited Mengele while he was stationed at Auschwitz, remembering the visit as a pleasant one. After the war, however, Irene was disillusioned by the necessity of pretending her husband was dead and visiting him in secret. She soon asked for a divorce. When Mengele moved to Argentina, Irene refused to go with him. Irene later met another man while Mengele was in Argentina, and she once again requested a divorce. Mengele obliged and Irene married her lover. At the time this book was published, Irene was living a quiet life in her hometown in Germany.
