What do crystals symbolize in the book, Eden: A Novel?

Everyone who lives in the underground community wears a crystal, which symbolizes their affinity for and connection to the Earth and nature. Rowan is given a crystal soon after her arrival and she still has it when she is in prison at the end of the novel.
