Eden is the self-contained society where Rowan lives and where she assumes all other humans live. Rowan and others in Eden have been taught that the Earth underwent a cataclysmic event that resulted in a barren wasteland that will not support life. Only the humans who arrived in Eden survived and they have to remain in the city until the Earth has time to heal. The city is laid out in circles, with the inner circles serving as home and community to the wealthy and influential while the outer circles are riddled with crime, poverty, and fear. It is all an illusion, as Rowan discovers, though she is imprisoned after her discovery so that she cannot tell anyone.
