Who is Joao from Child of the Dark and what is their importance?

Joao is Carolina's son. Carolina sends Joao out on errands regularly, even as a young child. Joao calls out his mother on their poverty and lack of sustenance, saying she lied when she told him they'd no longer have to eat garbage (literally). Carolina blamed the government.
