What is the author's tone in Child of the Dark by Carolina Maria de Jesus?

For the most part, de Jesus' tone is straight forward and matter of fact. There are sections, however, where the reader is required to really think about the points she makes in the text. These sections make us wonder whether she is being blatantly honest, sarcastic, or possibly both.
