In the first section, Lester encounters a woman on the mountain. This meeting foreshadows his later descent into violence towards women and necrophilia. During this encounter, Lester shows no force or malice, he simply offers to help her. Because she is disoriented and frightened, however, she turns on Lester, and in reacting, he tears her nightgown off. Although this is not as drastic as Lester's behavior will become, it seems the event triggers his violence and desire to control women.
