Who is Mr. Cumberland in Chatterton by Peter Ackroyd?

Mr. Cumberland is one of the owners of the art gallery Cumberland and Maitland. After purchasing a group of paintings by the author Seymour, Cumberland discovers he has been duped.... the paintings are merely forged copies. He then decides to sell them anyway.... forgeries or not.
