Upon seeing Veruca step forward to announce her name, Mr. Wonka launches into a sarcastic and biting series of comments directed toward Veruca. The tone of the passage is notably critical and backhandedly nasty in nature, as evidenced an examples such as Mr. Wonka's comment about Veruca's name. After announcing that it is a pleasure to meet her, Mr. Wonka immediately declares, "You do have an interesting name, don't you? I always thought that a veruca was a sort of wart that you got on the sole of your foot! But I must be wrong, mustn't I?" (58).
