In what small way does Mr. Bucket earn money during the time of his unemployment?

After the toothpaste factory where Mr. Bucket works closes down and fires all of its workers, Mr. Bucket struggles to make money however he can. Most of the time, though, he is lucky to "earn a few pennies" (37) by shoveling snow in the streets.
