Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

How are the title and subject matter of Chapter 10 at odds with a reader's typical expectations of a children's book?

The title of Chapter 10 is "The Family Begins to Starve" (37) and its details are actually quite chilling. Once Mr. Bucket loses his job at the toothpaste factory, the family enters a period of real danger due to malnutrition. The narrator says that each member of the family is lucky to get one slice of bread for breakfast and a boiled potato for lunch in one day during this period of time. Charlie especially grows thinner and weaker by the day, until the narrator describes his bones as poking out against the skin of Charlie's face.
