In the book Challenger Deep, what is the reason Caden gives as to why his friends do not connect with him anymore?

This is one of the homework questions and I can not seem to find the answer.

Over the course of his sophomore year in high school, Caden succumbs to a never-named mental illness which slowly manifests over time. This illness makes it difficult for Caden to connect with his friends. Caden’s parents ultimately have Caden committed to Seaview Memorial Hospital.
