What are Silko’s motives for writing this story? - What overarching message is she trying to convey?

This is largely a thematic question. I think the main theme is illustrating the contact between Native American and white cultures being largely destructive. Native cultures are suffocated and forced to change or completely assimilate. The importance and power of tradition becomes so important to the survival of native culture.
