Faced with the prospect of re-entering the Games during the Quarter Quell, Haymitch trains with Peeta and Katniss though Peeta ultimately volunteers in his stead. After the rebels hijack the Games, it is revealed that Haymitch has been working with the resistance throughout the novel, orchestrating the alliances and Katniss' rescue. The effect is that the reader and other characters see Haymitch with much greater respect. There is a sense that his drunkenness in Hunger Games was merely an act to act beyond suspicion.
