The peace treaty, formally signed in the winter of 1995, symbolizes for Lejla and Sara - and for most Bosnians - hope. But for Lejla and Sara, it is not a hope for political peace or a nonviolent way of life, but for the return of Armin. It is another change for Lejla to be with her brother and for Sara to find true love. Known as the Dayton Agreement, the fact that the treaty put an end to the three-and-a-half-year-long Bosnian War - one of the many horrible Yugoslav Wars - is entirely irrelevant. "All of a sudden, everything become unimportant...I remembered his hands untying my ponytail years before. How he tilted his head to see me better, the same way you did when you found something interesting" (142). The birth of Bosnia and Herzegovina meant the return of the beloved Armin.
