What is Sampson's reaction to the attack on Cross family?

Sampson is panicked when he sees all the cruisers around the Cross home when he rushes to the scene. He first sees Jannie on a litter, and the sight of her drops him to his knees. He does not feel brave or strong anymore. He moans loudly when he sees Damon, still alive but beaten. When he talks with Craig about Cross, he feels as though he is in shock and that his heart has been cut deeply.
