Soneji is confused about what when he wakes up in Detective Goldman's cellar?

Soneji wakes up in a cellar and at first does not remember where he is. His mind travels back to his being a boy locked up in the cellar in his Princeton home. He feels the basement floor and realizes from its smoothness that he is not in his family's house. Once he turns on the flashlight, he remembers that he is in Goldman's cellar and that he is going to commit an "outrageous" act.
