The central theme of the novel is communication and the ways that modern technology impacts the dating scene and complicates the ability of people to authentically connect with each other. The use of text messages is the central form of communication in the story and their use demonstrates the ways that electronic communication fails to provide the same kind of insight and connection that can be obtained through face-to-face interaction. The initial face-to-face conversations between Margot and Robert are superficial and stilted. Prior to agreeing to give him her phone number, Margot has heard Robert speak a grand total of 25 words: “Well… O.K., then”; “You’re getting better at your job… You managed not to insult me this time”; and “Concession-stand girl, give me your phone number.” These exchanges give Margot virtually no information about who Robert is as a person, other than the fact that he is attracted to her.
